After the timely folding of yet another Islamic terror
plot, the public's attention is focused once more on the "Paki
problem". Over twenty Muslims have been arrested in connection with the
alleged discovery of preparations to blow up a set of airplanes on
trans-Atlantic flights starting from London Heathrow. They are mostly holders
of British citizenship, born in Britain though of
South-Asian origin, and from well-settled families. To their British
neighbours, fellow students or colleagues, they must have looked like success
stories in terms of integration into British society. And yet, they secretly
wanted to terminate the lives of hundreds of anonymous Britons, not excluding
those same unsuspecting neighbours.

At
the time of the Ayodhya crisis, the Indian Left advocated "hard
secularism" as the only solution. This would mean outlawing Hindu
parties, imprisoning Hindu leaders, and bullets for the Kar Sevaks. In
the past month, the Americans have been trying out this hard secularism
in Afghanistan: eliminating Islamic fundamentalism by bombing the
already tattered remains of Kabul and Kandahar.

"The
Partition Holocaust": the term is frequently used in Hindu pamphlets
concerning Islam and the birth of its modern political embodiment in
the Subcontinent, the state of Pakistan. Is such language warranted, or
is it a ridicule-inviting exaggeration?

In
discussing Islam, most non-Muslims and ex-Muslims tend to focus on the
negative achievements of Islam, such as Islamic mistreatment of women
and unbelievers. However, we should realize that in its essence, Islam
is only secondarily an ethical system with a characteristic record of
conduct. In the first place it is a belief system, a truth claim. The
Islamic religion stands or falls with the truth or untruth of two
assertions: (1) there is no God but Allah, the Creator of the universe;
and (2) Mohammed is the final spokesman of Allah, who through him
passed on to mankind a series of messages assembled in the Quran. This
Quranic communication is understood to have been a constant process of
"revelation" from AD 610, when Mohammed was 40, until his death in AD
632.

the thirteen years since the publication of The Rushdie Affair, Salman
Rushdie's name has become a byword for the persecution of free speech
by the forces of militant Islam. Ironically, although Rushdie himself
is very much alive writing well-received books, popping up among the
literary jet-set, and even acquiring a new girlfriend the same cannot
be said of many other critics of Islam, both Muslim and not.
