The
ongoing commemoration of the abolition of the slave trade in the
British empire (1807) is being used by Christian missionary circles as
an occasion for Hindu-bashing through the theme of caste oppression as
a still-existing form of slavery. Hindu polemicists typically react by
highlighting the human-rights abuses committed by Christians or in the
name of Christianity through the centuries: witch-burning, persecution
of pagans and heretics, racism, apartheid and of course the slave trade
itself. The intended implication is that Christians are morally in no
position to berate Hindus for their social injustices and had better
not meddle in inter-Hindu matters. This may be a correct and
convincing position to take in front of a neutral or as yet uninformed
audience, but with Christians who know their religion, it is hopelessly
ineffective.

Whatever
one might have against the Christian missionaries, one cannot deny
their enormous energy in mapping the world's religious landscape, not
just by processing secondhand data in their armchairs, but by
collecting facts first-hand at the price of great discomfort and
sometimes at the risk of their lives. At a later stage, during the
implementation of their plans for conversion, the data are sometimes
twisted for propaganda purposes (e.g. by labelling the Indian tribals
as "monotheist" to distance them from the Hindus and bring them closer
to Christianity), but by and large, Christian fact-finding literature
about tribal religions is a treasure-trove of authentic information.

Now
that the dust has settled, let us have a look at the problem of
Christian missionary activities which raised a storm during the past
autumn and winter. In a debate on conversions, it may be useful to hear
the voice of a convert. I was raised as a Roman Catholic in Flanders,
the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, which was for centuries a Catholic
frontline region against Protestant Holland and Masonic-secularist
France, and a top-ranking provider of missionaries.

Herman
Rasschaert (1922-64) was a Flemish Catholic missionary in Chotanagpur, and now
the subject of a hagiography by the Flemish author Robert Houthaeve: "Recht,
al barstte de wereld!" (published by the author, 9 Puitstraat, 8890 Moorslede, Belgium). The term
"hagiography" is not used pejoratively here: as becomes clear in
Houthaeve's very detailed and well-documented description of his hero's life
and times, Rasschaert was an idealist of a type which is hard to come by
nowadays. In Flanders, the Dutch-speaking northern half
of Belgium, Catholic children of my
generation used to be told the then-recent account of his martyrdom; as
Rasschaert's sister was a schoolmate and lifelong friend of my mother's, I have
heard his story many times. Checking the story we were fed against this new and
detailed account proves most interesting.
